Foods that enhance the sex drive have been around for centuries and different cultures revere different types of food as aphrodisiacs. Foods resembling human genitalia like bananas, oysters, avocados and peaches are still believed to help increase libido. Spicy foods like hot peppers cause sweating and increase heart rate, which are sensations typically associated with sexual pleasure. Some foods like vanilla or licorice emit arousing aromas that can help put you in the mood.
Some cultures even consume actual animal genitals and other “reproductive” foods like fish roe and eggs to help improve fertility.
So, if you’re having trouble getting it on, maybe the answer is on your plate. Try these suggestions to help boost your libido, improve your stamina and enhance your performance in the bedroom.
The reputation of this melt-in-your-mouth fruit as an aphrodisiac can be traced back to the Aztec civilization, whose people called the avocado tree the “testicle tree” for the way its fruits hang low on the tree in pairs. On top of that, the fruit itself also resembles the female genitalia.
The avocado’s effects on sexual mood aren’t all based on its appearance. This nutrient-dense fruit is rich in glutathione, an antioxidant that is required in the production of sex hormones. It is also abundant in monounsaturated fats, which help lower anxiety, as well as vitamin E, which helps increase blood flow throughout the body.
The mouthwatering scent of cheese itself can induce feelings of arousal, but it is a substance called phenylethylamine (PEA) found in cheese that can trigger the brain to produce more sex hormones. This, in turn, results in that hormonal rush during sex.
PEA is typically associated with the next popular aphrodisiac on the list.
It wouldn’t be a list of aphrodisiac foods without mentioning chocolate. This decadent dessert contains PEA, a natural stimulant that helps the brain release more sex hormones.
Dark chocolate is also rich in flavonoids, which are plant compounds that can activate nitric oxide (NO) in the body. NO helps dilate blood vessels, allowing a better flow of blood throughout the body, including the penis – which can give firmer erections.
Indulging in a little chocolate won’t harm your diet as long as you choose the least processed kind – at least 70 percent cocoa. In fact, dark chocolate contains more health-supporting antioxidants than most foods.
Maca is a root vegetable widely consumed in South America to boost fertility. Studies have linked maca to improved sexual desire and improved semen quality, which leads to better fertility. Maca has also shown to have positive effects on erectile dysfunction.
Omega-3 fatty acids are known to support heart health, but they can also be beneficial to one’s libido by supporting the production of estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. Omega-3s also help the body absorb vitamin D, which is needed for the healthy function of sex hormones.
If you need a little more spark in the sheets, add more fatty fish, seafood, nuts and seeds to your diet. (Related: Aloe vera is a gentle aphrodisiac that enhances libido.)
Another food that resembles the female genitalia, oysters (especially raw) have been renowned for their aphrodisiac qualities throughout history. This shellfish contains libido-boosting compounds like zinc, which is a mineral needed in testosterone and sperm production in men and enhanced lubrication in women. Moreover, oysters contain dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of happiness and desire.
These nutrient-dense nuts are notable for their positive effects on erectile dysfunction. Studies show that snacking on pistachio nuts can help with better blood flow to the penis, which results in firmer erections.
If you’re looking to enhance your sexual experience, nourish your body with the proper foods and diet and see what happens. However, not everyone will respond to aphrodisiac foods the same way, so keep that in mind when choosing which foods to indulge in.
